October 2023 Trip to Memphis with College Friends

Image
I went to another 'reunion' with College Friends. We've been doing this for over 20 years. We play cards and visit tourism sites. This first image is from Beale Street in the heart of Memphis. From left: Gerry Berg, Jim Bading, Rocky Kelman, Martin Weiss, Glenn Kruser. The second image is from the Memphis visitor's center - large statue of B.B.King. ......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Dave Kroes who usually comes to these events was incapacitated with a fever. It is great to have 5 or more people because the game Schafkoft is better with 5 or more players.

Lorraine Motel

Image
We went to the Lorraine Motel historic site. This is where Martin Luther King Jr was killed in 1968. Everything has been preserved as it was that day. The shadow of the motel sign is visible on the image of the motel. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... On the hotel, near the left is a red and white ribbon showing the exact spot where King was when he was killed.

Cotton Museum

Image
We also visited the Cotton Museum. For many years, Memphis was the a world center of cotton trading. The scene in the image would have been similar to what was seen in the late 1800s after the invention of the telegraph but before the computer era. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... According to the Museum, Columbus found cotton growing in the Bahama Islands and this was one thing that led him to believe he had discovered India.

At Graceland

Image
These are images from the Graceland Museum. First image is at the entrance to the Museum ........................................................................................................................... Second image is of gold records that Elvis achieved from 1956-1959. In total more than 400,000,000 records of Elvis's music were sold as of 1987. Many of his records or albums made it to platinum or double platinum. Gold- 500k sold, Platinum 1M, Double Platinum 2M. He also had over 1000 live performances that were sold out. ................................................................................................................................. The third image is of the famous Chai that Elvis frequently wore. The necklace holding the Chai has 17 rather than 18 diamonds. No one is sure if a diamond was lost or stolen or if this was a mistake. .....................................................................................................................
